To become an Australian citizen by conferral you generally need to be a permanent resident, meet the residence requirement (usually four years of lawful residence in Australia with at least the last 12 months as a permanent resident, and no more than 12 months total absence over those four years and no more than 90 days in the final year), be of good character, have a basic level of English, understand the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, pass the citizenship test if you’re aged 18 to 59, and intend to live in or keep a close link with Australia. Most people apply through the “conferral” pathway after holding permanent residency. Children, people born to Australian parents, and some New Zealanders may qualify through different routes.
