Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Guide

What is OSHC? A plain guide to Overseas Student Health Cover: why it’s mandatory for student visas, how it works, how long you need it, and how BYD helps arrange it.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Guide

Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC, is the health insurance international students must hold for the whole time they’re on a student visa in Australia. It’s a condition of the visa, not an optional extra, and the Department of Home Affairs checks that you have it. OSHC helps cover the cost of seeing a doctor, some hospital treatment, ambulance in an emergency, and certain medicines while you study here.

This guide explains what OSHC is, why it’s required, how it works, and how long you need it. BYD Education & Immigration Consultants team helps international students arrange the right cover as part of getting your study and visa sorted.

Why OSHC is mandatory for student visa holders

Australia has a public health system called Medicare, but it’s for citizens, permanent residents and a few others. As an international student you generally can’t rely on it, so you need your own health cover instead. That’s what OSHC is for.

Holding OSHC for your entire stay is a condition of the Student visa (subclass 500). If your cover lapses, you’re breaching a visa condition, and that can put your visa at risk. This is why we make sure your cover is arranged before you lodge and runs for the full length of your visa, with no gaps.

What OSHC generally covers

OSHC is designed to give international students a safety net similar in spirit to what Medicare provides locals, though it isn’t identical and every policy has its own terms. Broadly, OSHC helps with:

Visits to a doctor (a general practitioner).

Some hospital treatment, both in-patient and out-patient.

Emergency ambulance transport.

Some prescription medicines, up to set limits.

Limited other services, depending on the policy.

What OSHC usually does not cover in full includes things like dental, optical, physiotherapy and similar “extras”, unless you take out a higher level of cover or a separate policy. There are also waiting periods for certain conditions, and some treatments have limits. Always read the specific policy so you know what you’re getting.

How OSHC works day to day

When you see a doctor or need treatment, how you pay depends on the provider and your policy. Sometimes the clinic bills your insurer directly. Other times you pay up front and claim the money back from your insurer afterward, usually through an app, a member portal, or in person. Your insurer gives you a membership number and card that you show when you access care.

It’s worth learning how your particular fund handles claims early, before you actually need a doctor, so it’s not stressful when you’re unwell. Keep your membership details somewhere easy to find.

How long you need OSHC

You need OSHC for the entire duration of your student visa, not just the length of your course. Because a student visa is usually granted for a bit longer than the course itself, your cover has to stretch to cover that whole period.

When you apply for your visa, you generally pay for cover for the full visa length up front, and your insurer issues a start and end date that match. If your course or visa is extended, you’ll need to extend your OSHC to match the new end date. If family members are on your visa, they need to be covered too, either on a couple or family policy. We check all of this so the dates line up and nobody is left uncovered.

Choosing an OSHC provider

Only certain insurers are approved to offer OSHC in Australia. Within that group, policies differ on price, the level of cover, waiting periods, and how easy they are to claim from. The cheapest single-cover policy isn’t always the best choice once you factor in what you actually need and whether family is involved.

We help you compare approved providers against your situation, the length of your visa, and whether you need single, couple or family cover, so you’re not just picking the first option a college hands you. [current figure — confirmed at consultation]

We keep this guide general on purpose, and we don’t quote premiums or endorse a single insurer online, because prices and policies change and the right choice depends on you. You’ll get specific, current options in your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

OSHC stands for Overseas Student Health Cover. It’s the health insurance international students must hold for the length of their student visa in Australia. People sometimes misspell it “OHSC”, but it’s OSHC.

Yes. Holding OSHC for your entire stay is a condition of the student visa (subclass 500). If your cover lapses you’re breaching a visa condition, which can put your visa at risk.

The premium depends on the provider, the level of cover, how long your visa runs, and whether you need single, couple or family cover. Because prices change and vary by policy, we won’t quote a figure here. We’ll give you current options in your consultation.

For the full length of your student visa, which is usually a little longer than your course. When you apply, you generally pay for cover matching the whole visa period, and you extend it if your visa is extended.

Usually not in full. Standard OSHC focuses on medical and hospital care. Dental, optical and physiotherapy are typically “extras” that need a higher level of cover or a separate policy. Check your specific policy.

Generally no. Medicare is for citizens, permanent residents and a few others. Most international students can’t rely on it, which is exactly why OSHC is required. A small number of students from countries with a reciprocal health care agreement may have some access, so ask us if you think that could apply to you.

For the student visa, you generally arrange and pay for cover for the full visa length before you lodge, so the dates match. We make sure the start and end dates align with your visa.

Yes, you can switch insurers, as long as you keep continuous cover with no gap. The important thing is that you’re always covered for the whole visa period.

It can. If your partner or children are on your student visa, they need to be covered too, on a couple or family policy. We make sure they’re included correctly.

That’s a problem, because a lapse breaches your visa condition. If you extend your course or visa, you must extend your OSHC to match. We check your dates so this doesn’t catch you out.

There’s no single best provider for everyone. Approved insurers differ on price, cover levels, waiting periods and how easy they are to claim from. We help you compare them against your own situation rather than pointing you to one name.
