A visitor visa (subclass 600) lets someone come to Australia for a holiday, to see family, or for a short business trip. On the Gold Coast that covers two very different groups: tourists coming for the beaches, theme parks and events, and, more often for us, parents and family members coming to visit relatives who’ve settled here. Most visitor visa applications are straightforward, but the ones that get refused usually do so because the applicant didn’t clearly show they’ll go home at the end, or the funds and invitation weren’t put together well.

The subclass 600 is a temporary visa for visiting Australia. It has several streams, and the right one depends on who’s applying and why:
Tourist stream: for holidays and visiting family, applied for either inside or outside Australia.
Sponsored Family stream: where a relative in Australia sponsors the visitor, sometimes with a security bond, which can strengthen an application that might otherwise struggle.
Business Visitor stream: for short business activities like meetings or conferences.
A visitor visa lets you stay for a set period per visit, and it does not allow work. It’s about visiting, not living or working here.
By far the most frequent visitor visa we handle for Coast clients is parents coming to see their adult children and grandchildren. Families settled around Robina, Coomera, Southport and Nerang want mum and dad here for a birth, a graduation, a wedding, or just a long stay with the grandkids. The application turns on showing the visit is genuine and temporary, that the parents have reasons to return home, and that costs are covered.
This visit-now approach also pairs well with a longer plan. Many families use a visitor visa so a parent can spend time here while a permanent parent visa sits in the queue. It’s not a substitute for the parent visa, but it keeps the family together in the meantime, and we often set the two up alongside each other.
The department needs to be satisfied the visitor genuinely intends to stay temporarily and will leave when the visa ends. Refusals cluster around a few issues: thin evidence of ties to the home country, unclear or insufficient funds, a vague reason for the visit, or a history that raises questions. We help build an application that answers those concerns before they’re raised: a clear invitation and purpose, proof of funds, evidence of ties back home, and, where it helps, sponsorship or a bond.
Some visitor visas carry conditions, such as “No Further Stay” (8503), that limit what you can do next. If a visitor is already in Australia and their visa is ending, a bridging visa may keep them lawful while a new application is decided, but the rules are specific. Don’t assume, check with us first.
