Be a permanent resident.
Meet the residence requirement, which is about how long you’ve lawfully lived in Australia and how much of that as a permanent resident, with limits on time spent overseas.
Be of good character.
Pass the citizenship test, if you’re in the age range that has to sit it.
Intend to live in, or keep a close and continuing link with, Australia.
There are other pathways too, including citizenship by descent for people born overseas to an Australian parent, and rules for children. If you became a permanent resident through skilled migration or a partner visa, conferral is usually the road to citizenship once you’ve been here long enough.
This is the part that trips Coast applicants up most. The residence requirement counts your time in Australia in a specific way, and it’s strict about how much time you can have spent overseas, both in total and in the twelve months before you apply. People who travel a lot for work, or who spent time offshore before or after getting permanent residency, often miscount and apply too early, which leads to a refusal or a request for more information.

If you’re in the age range required to sit it, the citizenship test covers Australia’s values, history and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. It’s done on a computer and you prepare from official material. It’s not designed to catch people out, but it does need preparation. We point you to the right resources and explain what to expect, and we sort out any special arrangements if you need them.
Once your application is approved, you become a citizen at a citizenship ceremony where you make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. On the Gold Coast, ceremonies are run by the City of Gold Coast council, so you don’t need to travel to Brisbane for that final step, it happens locally. It’s the moment it all becomes official, and for most families it’s a big day.

Coast residents often come in for the first meeting, and many handle the whole citizenship application online with us. Your ceremony, though, is run locally by the City of Gold Coast council.
