To study a full-time course on the Gold Coast as an international student, you’ll almost always need a Student visa (subclass 500). The Coast is a genuine study destination in its own right, with Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus at Southport, Bond University at Robina, and a spread of vocational and English-language colleges. Getting the visa right matters as much as choosing the right course, because a weak application, or the wrong course for your goals, can cost you time, money and a lot of stress.

The subclass 500 lets you stay in Australia to study a full-time registered course. To get it, you’ll generally need:
A confirmed enrolment (a Confirmation of Enrolment, or CoE) from a registered Gold Coast course or provider.
To meet the Genuine Student requirement, showing you’re coming to Australia mainly to study.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the length of your stay.
Enough funds to cover tuition, living costs and travel.
English language ability at the level your course requires.
The visa can usually cover the length of your course, and it comes with work rights that let you work a capped number of hours while your course is in session, and more during scheduled breaks. That work allowance is a real help with Gold Coast living costs, especially given the Coast’s hospitality and retail scene is always after casual staff.
It’s tempting to pick a course on price, or because a friend is doing it. That’s a mistake. The right course depends on your goals, your budget, your academic background, and what you want to do after you finish. A Griffith degree, a Bond program and a diploma at a Southport college are very different choices with very different costs and outcomes.
